What our customers say about us

Jennifer Hinchly (08-29-2010): I had a great stay at The Backpack.

Marian Van Der Kar (08-25-2010): Great stay! Will stay again if we return to South Africa, and we hope to! Only good things to say about our experience there.

Ronald Eppel (08-25-2010): I really enjoyed my stay there. One thing I would criticise: There could be more showers & toilets. The drinks at the bar of the backpack & africa travel centre were cheap for Europen conditions but the most expensive I experienced in all other backpackers in south africa (I stayed at 9 different ones...)

Kristi Rohtsalu (07-24-2010): Make it a little easier to find the rooms in the house. Also, my room could have been a little warmer when I arrived.

Alison Voon (07-09-2010): I have marked "value for money" as low because I paid more than I would've expected normally because it was the world cup though I understand that this has happened with most accommodation at the time, it still cost a lot more than I am used to. That said, the facilities are great and everything is always clean. The breakfast in the morning was absolutely amazing, I don't know if it was a world cup special or a usual thing but it was fantastic. I haven't even seen anything that good in some hotels! The bar had a very nice vibe and there were lots of areas for sitting, chatting and meeting new people. I did have a cold shower once which wasn't so great but overall, I could deal.

Katja Peterseh (07-09-2010): It was a bit pricey during world cup -I hope the prices comes down to normal soon. Thanx for a great stay and lekker breakfast

Mark Heathfield (07-09-2010): Really enjoyed my stay, however, value for money? it was during the world cup so much higher than the normal rates.

Riccardo Petersen (05-16-2010): Hi guys, I am just industry staff and I think your place is great! I would love to stay with you guys again! peace!

Thorsten Fuchs (05-02-2010): My stay at the Backpack was the most expensive per night on my whole garden route trip. Sure, Cape Town is the place to be and the Backpack as an almost perfect location combined with a nice view up to Table Mountain and excellent atmosphere - but compared to the comfort and luxury (breakfast incl.) I experienced at the guesthouses in Hermanus and Plettenberg Bay where I was the nights before, that doesn't fully justify rates per night that were doubled compared to those guesthouses... Still, your place is beautiful and the kindness and hospitality the staff conveyed makes it a place where one can feel very much at home.

Junis Sarrouj (04-26-2010): the first day I arrived, I was too tired, beceause I hadn't any rest that night. However I couldn't get into my room before 2pm. I know that are the rules in all the hotels, however it was too hard to fell asleep on the sofa waiting untill 2. secondly, many people are really dependant on the internet. And sometimes there was ony one pc working in the internet room. If you could do something about that, that would be great for all your customers What I want to end with is that I'm really happy with my visit to your backpack place and If I vistit cape town another time I will definitely come to your place.

What the Literatie say about us

The Lonely Planet: Setting the gold standard for Cape Town's backpackersis The Backpack. Three spacious houses combined to create a relaxed hostel with something for everyone, be it a lively time at the Thursday night African drumming sessions or just chilling out in the chic rooms. Never one to rest on their laurels, the Backpack recently received Fair Trade in Tourism accreditation.

Rough Guides: An excellent lodge in four interconnected houses, on the cusp of the City Bowl suburbs and the city centre, and easily walkable to both. Well run an with excellent service, it's furnished with bold colours and ethnic fabrics, with plenty of outdoor space, including a pool terrace in its own garden. Accommodation is in dorms (sleeping 4-8)  and private rooms (several of which are en suite); some rooms suitable for families. There's an on-site travel centre, a 24/7 Internet cafe and a bar open till late.

Haystack: Review by author Gemma Pitcher
Not too laid-back, not too loud: guests love the Backpack and it's easy to see why. It's kept its place in the hearts of Cape Town's backpackers by offering top-notch accommodation and friendly, clued-up service.
The central space of the Backpack is a very stylish bar/cafe, with a flagstone floor and a comforting open fire. It's here you'll meet the friendly staff who'll check you in, book your onward tickets and dispense a wealth of travel advice, on everything from the bars and clubs on your doorstep to remote bus stops several countries away. The big yard outside has pretty mosaic tables - these, and the mosaics around the good-sized pool round the back, were created using people from the local townships trained especially for the purpose and given a valuable skill in the process. The Backpack is very keen on helping the local community - guests here are asked to donate old clothes to help the primary school founded by the hostel. The accommodation is excellent, with pretty double rooms, clean and spacious dorms, a cosy lounge and a well-equipped self-catering kitchen.

On Hostelworld

While I appreciate the fact that it was the holiday season, I felt that the partying very late into the night might not be welcomed by all visitors. Other than loud music until wee hours, I had an AMAZING time at your establishment. See you again, I hope! Igor December 09
