Taking the stage to give the audience a concert of note in true Clegg tradition this is one of our most famous exports and a true son of South Africa. With his own distinctive brand of music Clegg is energetic and passionate and a maestro of rock and has been delighting audiences for over 30 years playing to sold out concerts globally. This Old Mutual Encounter features the super talented SAMA award winner Claire Phillips as she envelops you in her special brand of South African music. Her vocal range and precision guitar have been hailed as the hottest new talent on the music scene. As a vocalist and songwriter her repertoire spans jazz, funk, soul and folk. When you place her with the extraordinary talent of composer/performer Neo Muyanga (ex Blk Sonshine) the musical combination is set to blow you away. This multi faceted artist performs on a variety of acoustic instruments and will delight the audience with his compositions. 6 December : Jesse Clegg To have two Cleggs on the line-up is a coup and though his dad is a legend, Jesse is making a name for himself in his chosen genre: rock. Settling on the guitar as his instrument of choice this multi talented singer/songwriter musician has already seen his single "Today" debut at number 1 on the Highveld "Homebrew" Chart. Nominated for two awards at the 2009 South African Music Awards for ‘Record Of The Year' an d ‘Music Video Of The Year' for the track ‘Today', he recently performed at the Mandela Day concert in New York City, held at the Radio City Music Hall, alongside a variety of world famous performers and musicians. 13 December : The Jonny Cooper Orchestra Get in the Christmas mood with the Jonny Cooper Orchestra, South Africa's ‘Ambassadors of Big Band Swing' who return to Kirstenbosch to pay tribute to the famous Swing bands and vocalists, of the 1940's swing era. Including Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and many more, as well as some seasonal favourites, this will certainly get you in the mood!. The orchestra is recipient of the prestigious Big Band Hall of Fame award (USA) that honours them for perpetuating, promoting and performing the sounds of the Big Band Era with integrity. 17, 18, 19, 20 Dec : Carols by Candlelight Traditional Christmas Carols, accompanied by the Cape Town Concert Brass Band and the Cape Town Male Voice Choir, organised by the Rotary Club of Kirstenbosch and sponsored by Pick ‘n Pay.
Please note the Carols start at 20h00 and gates open at 17h00. The entrance fee on 17 December is R40 for adults and R20 for children. On 18/19/20 December: R50 for adults and R30 for children. 27 December : Ashtray Electric & Pretty Blue Guns
Ashtray Electric is changing the face of music! Winner of the MK Award 2009 for Best Newcomer these Belville Boys bring a fresh new sound to the stage. A delicate mixture of foot-tapping beats and rolling riffs. Their very own identity of music is inspired by a large selection of musical styles and genres.
The Pretty Blue Guns started playing together when they entered a high school Battle of The Bands competition. Described as “gritty blues rock”, their influences range from early Robert Johnson era blues, to Tom Waits, to the more recent acts The Black Keys and Kings Of Leon, and everywhere in between. 3 January : A Fist Full of Diamonds with Josie Field, Farryl Purkiss and Dan Patlansky
Josie Field is hailed as a new alternative pop performer and, a side from having two radio hits with her first two singles, Josie Field is a captivating young soul on stage, singing her heart with passion, enchanting, spiritual and magnificent. Whether playing her original material from her debut album ‘Mercury' or entertaining with her choice of eclectic but well presented popular covers she is an entertainer of note.
The mellow folk blues sounds of Farryl Purkiss are a joy to listen to. This surfer/interior designer/ /musician has captured the imagination of all as he plays his guitar across the world, add to that his song writing and harmonica playing and you have a set up that is pure entertainment.
The final diamond in this trio is Dan Patlansky. A critically acclaimed Blues guitarist his busy schedule has shown that he is one of the best and most respected blues artists to ever come out of South Africa. One of our best loved groups, bridging historical divides, recognizable wherever they go with music that appeals across the ages, Freshlyground draw the crowds. 17 January : Zebra & Giraffe
Back by popular demand Zebra & Giraffe has been playing to sold out audiences around the country since their appearance at Kirstenbosch last year. The cleverly named act is actually the 12-lettered pseudonym of Johannesburg music wunderkind, Greg Carlin. Carlin is Zebra & Giraffe and the 10-songs on ‘Collected Memories' are an announcement of his own special take on making music to all who hear it. (Price: Rate 3)

24 January : Fokofpolisiekar
Initially the band was formed as a joke to shock the mostly conservative Afrikaans community with its name and notion of an Afrikaans punk band. Well known in local underground music circles from their work in the bands New World Inside, 7th Breed and 22 Stars, they released their first EP, As jy met vuur speel sal jy brand, soon after forming. Hemel op die Platteland made history when it became the first Afrikaans song to be officially playlisted on national radio 5FM. Brand Suid Afrika became a hit song from their 2006 album, Swanesang. Rocking their audiences these boys have become firm favourites with all audiences. (Price: Rate 2)

31 January : OLD MUTUAL ENCOUNTER - Lira & friends : HHP and RJ Benjamin
If it's soul you're looking for then this Encounter brings some of South Africa's greats together with an afternoon ranging from soul, rap and R&B.
Queen of soul, Lira Molapo, winner of four SAMA Awards including Best Album and Best Female Solo Artist in 2009 is an Afro-Soul artist who moves easily from R&B to jazz, from lush pop to bossa. With Hip Hop Pantsula, HHP, as he is commonly known whose rap style preformed in multiple languages, although primarily Setswana, expect a concert of pure style. A style setter he is not only a great entertainer but won the 2007 series of SA Strictly Come Dancing and has appeared as himself in Rhythm City. This music trailblazer is joined by RJ Benjamin, known as the white man with a black man's soul. His outstanding skills as a writer and producer have seen him working with renowned artists such as blues guitarist Dan Patlansky, DJ Cleo, HHP, MXO and many more. Jamali (Jacqui, Mariechan and Liesl,) are the all girl group with the hot sound. Three young women, all vocally and lyrically talented way beyond their collective years, bright, vital and desirable their debut album hit gold and pure gold is what they give on stage with their smattering of house R&B, and Afro Pop these girls offer and infections and melodious encounter. 28 February : Prime Circle
Hot on the heal s of their hugely s ucce s s ful tour of India, South Africa' s premier rock band Pri m e Circle continue to celebrate with new s that their third albu m and EMI debut All Or Nothing ha s j u s t gone platinum. The band has always been known for igniting stages and their sell-out tour of India was no different. Their third single “Consider Me” lifted from All or Nothing, went straight in at the Number One position just one week after the last show had been performed. Goldfish are a true South African success story. The easy-going nature of Dom and Dave offstage belies their fearsome live show and an unstoppable ambition to take on the worlds' best. Sweeping across the garden the melodic sounds of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is always a special occasion. With conductor Pieter Daniel, sit back and relax with Rossini's La gazza ladra Overture. Watershed has an audience that spans generations and their popularity extends globally.
In South Africa and Europe however, Watershed is better defined as the band around songwriter and lead singer Craig Hinds. Their latest album “Staring at the Ceiling” was released in August 2008 and has already reached Gold Status in South Africa. Effortlessly joining the success of its predecessors, all three single releases from this fourth album, (“Breathing”, “Train Ride” and “Future Sunshine”), went instantaneously Top Ten in the SA Airplay Charts. 4 April (Easter) : SPECIAL OLD MUTUAL TWO OCEANS MARATHON ENCOUNTERS CONCERT
Gang of Instrumentals, Tidal Waves and Tumi Molekane
Part of the Old Mutual Two Oceans Festival of Events, this Encounter s Concert is about putting South African musicians from different musical or creative backgrounds together and giving them the space to collaborate and develop a performance that is unique and creatively adventurous. This particular Encounter sees Gang of Instrumentals and Tidal Waves combine with Tumi Molekane to complete the line up. Tidal Waves is a band whose sound is original roots reggae with strong rock, ska and blues strands. The band is widely respected in South African music circles as an honest, hard working band with an original sound, irie vibes and a dynamic live performance. Bringing Tumi Molekane on stage with them is a stroke of genius as this young man – an MC, poet and wordsmith – brings his own honest lyrics into the mix and inspires with his social relevance. Concert Tickets Tickets go on sale on the Tuesday preceding each concert, from the Visitors' Centre Ticket Office only. On Sundays tickets will be available at all three entrances.
Telephonic bookings (021 761 2866) can be made from the Tuesday before each concert, with an administration fee of R10 per ticket applicable.
Online bookings can be made at www.webtickets.co.za. Redeem your e-ticket at the Kirstenbosch Ticket Office from the Tuesday before, or on concert day.
Concert Times Gates open at 15h30. Concerts are held between 17h30 and 18h45 and go ahead irrespective of the weather. Refunds are not issued.
Kids Zone Supervised entertainment and activities for young children during concerts, at the top of the concert lawn.
Spotlight on Biodiversity Exhibits on a diverse range of biodiversity conservation topics, from butterflies to climate change, at the top of the concert lawn.
