About the Festival

OUT THE BOX 2010

20 March – 28 March Presented by UNIMA SA

The Out The Box Festival of Puppetry & Visual Performance bursts onto the stages and screens of the Baxter Theatre Centre, The UCT Hiddingh campus in Gardens and the labia Cinema. Artists present their wildest and most beautiful imaginings in works using puppetry, projection, objects, circus arts, multi- media and live performers; walking the tightrope between performance and visual art. Included in the breath taking line-up for this year are international and local visual theatre and film makers, established performance and visual artists and contemporary dancers as well as several new works by emerging artists.

This year UNIMA SA, in association with ASSITEJ South Africa (the association for youth theatre), has created a Family Festival programme to wonder and delight you, featuring both overseas artists and preeminent Southern African theatre practitioners.

Expect the unexpected: there will be shows in theatres, shows on top of theatres and even a show up a tree and not just performances but also workshops, talks, exhibitions and films. You will find live art and installations up staircases and around corners. The conference this year focuses on women in visual performance and we offer a range of exciting workshops by specialists in the many diverse forms of puppetry, including a workshop by South Africa’s national treasure, Handspring Puppet Company.

We invite you to explore a visual world of dreams and imaginings with us.

Description

The Baxter Theatre Centre provides an exciting forum for the celebration of life which is the essence of live theatre, music and dance. It is one of the major live theatre venues in Cape Town and has always been at the forefront of the performing arts both as a popular venue and as a leading producer.

The Baxter Theatre Centre at the University of Cape Town endeavours to present and host the best of South African performing arts. The objective is to reflect the cultures of all the people of South Africa on our stages and in our foyers and galleries. We envisage a vibrant cultural centre developing an interactive relationship with our local and university communities. We strive to present cutting-edge and major works from South Africa and masterpieces from the international repertoire.

The Baxter Theatre Centre, designed by Jack Barnett, opened on 1 August 1977. It came into being as the result of a bequest from the late Dr W. Duncan Baxter who, in his will, bequeathed an amount of money to the University of Cape Town for the purpose of establishing a theatre which would, in the words of Dr Baxter, "develop and cultivate the arts in Cape Town and the adjacent districts".

Since its opening in 1977 the complex has continued to provide a stage for all types of professional entertainment - music, drama, ballet, opera and intimate theatre. Even through the difficult years of racial segregation its doors remained open to everyone and it thrived, drawing on indigenous talent and creating a uniquely South African theatre tradition.
