Description

Since opening two months ago at the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg, Beauty and the Beast has been seen by 160,000 people and praise has been heaped on all aspects of the staging, accomplished under the watchful eye of Julie Dunnley-Wendt, her international Disney creative team and the South African resident director Alan Swerdlow.Internationally, the production has been seen by more than 35 million people in over 100 cities worldwide, and its magic is now sweeping South Africa.

Beauty and the Beast tells the “tale as old as time”. A love story in two acts, it begins with a young, spoiled prince who is transformed into a hideous beast because of his shallowness and selfishness. In order to break the spell cast over him, he has to learn to love another and earn her love in return, before the last petal falls off the rose left by the enchantress who bewitched him. The subsequent journey is magical and emotive and has had audiences enthralled by the exceptional cast's performances, imaginative sets, delightful choreography and cleverly designed costumes.

This grand, heart warming and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical features all the beloved songs from the film, as well as a few pinches of magic in scenes that have audiences scratching their heads in puzzlement and wondering, “How did they do that?” It is a lavish production that is breathtaking in its delivery and superb entertainment for audiences of all ages.

Beauty and the Beast opens at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town on 28 January 2009 and was to run until 8 March 2009 but has now been extended till the 29 March 2009. Tickets cost from R150 to R400 via Computicket, 083 915 8000 or 021 421 7695.
